Sony a7 IV vs. a6700: Which Camera Should You Choose?

Sony’s camera lineup can feel like a puzzle. There are different numbers, different sensor sizes, and enough overlapping features to make you wonder whether you’re buying the right one.
If you’re comparing the Sony a7 IV and Sony a6700, the decision comes down to what you shoot, how much gear you want to carry, and what you can spend on lenses.

One detail worth clearing up: these aren’t Sony’s two newest cameras. The a7 IV was announced in October 2021, and the a6700 followed in July 2023. A newer kit listing doesn’t necessarily mean a new camera body. Both deserve a closer look if you’re shopping for a camera that shoots photos and video.
This is my buying perspective based on Sony’s published specifications, rather than a hands-on comparison of these two cameras.

Sony a7 IV: my pick when photography comes first
The a7 IV makes sense if portraits, products, landscapes, and client photography are a big part of your work.
Its 33MP full-frame sensor gives you more resolution than the a6700. That extra detail can be useful when you crop a photo or want a larger print.
For me, the reason to choose it would be building a full-frame photography kit that also handles video. Think business portraits in the morning, product photos in the afternoon, and an interview afterward.
There is one video detail to understand before buying: 4K at 60p uses a Super 35 crop. Your framing gets tighter, so you need to account for that when choosing a lens for small rooms, wide shots, or real estate work.
I’d choose the a7 IV if photography drives most of my projects and I have enough money left for the lenses those projects need.

Sony a6700: my pick for travel and everyday content
The a6700 is the one I’d lean toward for a smaller setup that needs to do a little of everything.
It combines a 26MP APS-C sensor with a dedicated AI processor for subject recognition and tracking. It also records detailed 4K up to 60p using 6K oversampling, plus 4K at 120p for slow motion with an additional crop.
That makes it an appealing choice for travel videos, social content, behind-the-scenes footage, and a camera you’ll actually bring along when you leave the house.
The 120p option gives you more room for slow-motion shots than the a7 IV’s 4K recording modes. Just remember that the extra crop tightens your view. If wide slow-motion footage matters to you, plan your lens choice around it.
The supplied a6700 listing is a lens kit. That can be a convenient way to start, but check the selected package carefully before comparing its price with an a7 IV body-only listing.

Don’t spend your entire budget on the body
Before choosing either camera, price out the whole setup.
What lens will you use most? Do you need a microphone for interviews? Will you need lighting for products or an extra battery for long days?
I’d rather have a camera that fits my work, a useful lens, and clear audio than spend everything on a body and struggle to finish the kit.
Start with the shots you want to make. Then work backward to the gear.
Which one would I choose?
For travel, social content, and an everyday mix of photos and video, I’d lean toward the a6700. Its compact design and 4K slow-motion options fit that kind of work well.
For a kit built mainly around portraits, products, and client photography, I’d lean toward the a7 IV. Its full-frame sensor and higher resolution are the reasons I’d make that jump.
Neither choice needs to be complicated by every other Sony model on the shelf. Pick the one that fits your next few projects—and leaves enough in the budget to shoot them well.
